The Cthaeh first appeared up-close as the Reavers were searching for Mist. Mariana approached it and pulled from it a red sending stone, and a voice from the tree called it "a gift from Ashaksell." The Cthaeh then said it would not harm the party, and when asked how to escape the Plane of Dust it replied it knew, but "everything at a price." It said their situation was "much worse" than simply being stuck on another plane. The Cthaeh urged the party to leave with haste, saying that it will miss this. Just as the party turned to leave, it whispered to Astraea, "your eye is not a blessing."

The tree has not been seen since, though Reldan informed Lya that the real reason for their exile had to do with it. The two of them, along with Sylviana, approached it but failed to get close.

When Lya informed Ashaksell about the sending stone, they were surprised and immediately destroyed it, claiming they did not give the Cthaeh a stone. This, along with the Magi calling Aster's eye a gift, proves that the Cthaeh— unlike Eladrins— is capable of telling a lie.
