Firmer Footing

"Firmer Footing" is the first session of Season 2.

The group finds shelter within the strange landscape.

It was played on April 23, 2023.

The date in-game is the 7th day of Fall in Disc Standard Time (DST).

Synopsis

After landing below the wall of sand, the party finds themselves in a desert of fine dust. A flaming eye appeared and spoke to some members telepathically, in multiple languages, and said its duty was to watch them. It is associated with the Dwarven pantheon. Seeing what looked like a cluster of buildings in the distance, the group pressed forward and, after stepping through a circular waterfall of dust, arrived in a ring of waystones solidifying the ground below and the ceiling above. Small buildings stood within.

Plot

  • We are in the desert?  It is not sand, it is finer powder
  • Compasses point south in this campaign
  • Mariana and Mist notice a peak of a nearby dune. We walked up to it, it is a point of light emanating from a point, nothing specific to a point, it was almost like the light is coming from a point almost centralized in the space, roughly 6 ft above
  • Aella is ritual casting Detect Magic and Aster is trying to see if the pearl can be used to cast identify
    • The pearl is roughly worth 300 silver so identify is cast
    • Mist is watching Aster cast Identify
  • Ullanor is testing his axe, a big explosion thingy, Mist and Mariana see it explode in color and then go back to grey
  • Whatever appears to be casting the light is a flaming eye in a ring of wings, it is the ellipse of an eye
  • Aella readied her sword, Quill pushed her sword
    • Aella said it spoke in Common,
    • Quill “Who are you….. Then what do you watch….. So us”
    • Mariana “Do you mean us harm…. So you’re just a spectator then, huh”
    • It spoke to them in their mind
    • Rey “Is there any specific reason you are watching us? From who?” she said it said it was our duty to watch us
    • Ullanor said it is of the gods
    • Aella is trying to speak with it in Celestial, she said that she asked about the Magi and it said the Magi aren’t connected to it
    • It is in one of the Dwarven pantheons, it was associated with his god but also some other gods too
  • The Compass is supposed to point toward the nearest solid land, it points toward the nearest island possibly. That implies that we are not currently on solid land
  • We start following the compass, walking is like trying to walk through flour, it is only a little larger grain size than flour
  • Rey noticed that there are buildings in the direction the compass is pointing, it would take us roughly 2 to 3 days
  • Aella was fixing makeup and showed the mirror to Rey, Rey, and Aella have no reflection, Aster checked and they have a reflection. Aella’s mirror double died and Aella said that Rey’s is dead too.
  • Quill and Mariana meet, Quill found a bag that fell from the sky. It contains oddly shaped silver, it is the same system of currency, just a different mint technically. Our pieces are trapezoidal in shape, these are those pieces forged into coin-shaped things stamped on both sides. Trapezoidal shape is accepted by roughly everything, mainly merchants, but some shapes are more difficult to carry around
    • Only the bag fell
  • Quill found a gem in the bag, roughly reddish, it is cut. It's not a ruby, it's a carnelian, it's not magical
  • The scouting group walked up to a pretty steady flow of sand coming from the sand above, Ullanor tied a rope to himself and went through the sand, he yelled back that its fine to go through
  • They find the “buildings”, they are nine dark stone obelisks in a rough circle, the sand extends all around the circle, and the sand above and the sand below is flat.
    • they are the way stone things, foreign obelisks, they have been there for as long as anyone could remember, they look like they were made, but made a long time ago. A dark slightly bluish stone.
    • They give a slight amount of comfort because they are something from our world. Between all of them is an abandoned camp, rough mud brick structures probably created from water supplies, and the dust around.
    • Quill is checking if this is where the compass was pointing, it points to the nearest way stone
    • Usually, they are encountered alone, there are myths of an arch, a bridge, or a circle
    • They stretch into the sand ceiling”
    • They are not perfectly smooth
    • The surface feels a lot more solid
    • There are 6 remaining structures that have no doors, not counting the center point with a stove area, like mud igloos
    • First building–was probably a stand-in for a church or something, as close as you could get in this scenario, seems slightly dwarven in this construct, climb through what remains of the ceiling, and he finds a body in a burial shroud on a constructed table off to one side, and front and center an altar. Whoever built it built for Haylla Brightaxe–the goddess of war, the symbol is a coin imprinted with an axe sort of in-spin. There is a small book with a porcelain cover which is made up of three pieces, Ullanor takes it. He approaches the corpse respectfully, it looks like a humanoid of some kind is under the shroud, and it seems a bit dehydrated, It doesn’t look like a dwarven corpse.
      • People are trying to see if it seems like something happened to stop this ritual
      • Looks like a fight may have broken out, things were pushed away as if people pushed past them, they were probably made out of the same fired clay stuff and may have crumbled
      • The corpse doesn’t smell and it isn’t undead

Trivia

  • Despite one of the first things that happened being an inspection of the desert and clarification that it is not sand, it was still referred to as sand for the rest of the campaign. It's even in a few titles.
